In this presentation Dr. Charles H. Morgan reviews case studies to help learners identify differential diagnosis and appropriate management in peri-partum patients exhibiting new onset of neurological symptoms. Pregnant and post-partum patients are at high risk for vascular disease.  The incidence of stroke in this population is on the rise and is the most disabling complication of pregnancy. It is important for physicians to quickly recognize stroke symptoms, determine a diagnosis and establish an appropriate treatment plan to prevent catastrophic disability or death.  Physicians, particularly hospitalists and emergency medicine physicians commonly care for patients with new onset stroke symptoms and/or stroke diagnosis requiring rapid evaluation and treatment to prevent or mitigate patient death and disability.  Ongoing education is important to ensure current practice meets updated clinical practice guidelines in an effort to optimize patient outcomes. 

1. Describe the differential diagnosis of abrupt stroke signs in the peri-partum patient.
2. Review the algorithm for evaluation and treatment of these patients.
