Overview

During this presentation, Amanda Vanlandingham, M.D. reviews the new guidelines published July 2021 by the American Academy of Pediatrics.  She first reviews the historical approach to evaluating and managing this patient cohort, including prediction models and tools for this cohort.  She noted the shift in care when experts accepted the inability to predict high-risk infants and placed their focus on determining who was low-risk.  Dr. Vanlandingham reviewed the advances in testing, bacteriology and technology that assist with diagnosing and treatment of infants.  She outlined various studies and collaboratives in Europe and the United States that assisted with risk stratification and development of the new guidelines.  She reviewed the change in terminology from Serious Bacterial Infection (SBI) to Invasive Bacterial Infection (IBI), noting that UTIs are addressed separately from IBIs.  She provided an in-depth breakdown of each arm of the new guidelines.

The live presentation of this course occurred at the 2021 Neonatal and Pediatrics Conference.
